Hey, we're still here and have many happenings to write about... And I will, I just have to think about all that there is to tell. But until then, I hope, friends, that all is well with you and you have sunny weather to enjoy.
A friend recently wrote a post about how you can contribute to paying down the national debt. I found this idea intriguing as it makes me a little nervous that our country owes 13 trillion dollars to other countries like China.
So I tried to think of a few ways to help pay down the national debt without raising taxes or cutting services from the government (trying to appease the left and the right, you see. ) Now this is just for entertainment purposes, so don't jump all over me!
1. Everyone should give their spare change to the government. We could have a huge "spare change" drive once a year or so. If you find a sudden windfall of a few dollars then be altruistic and give it to the government. Of course, we might have to create some sort of an oversight committee... Who should be on it?
2. Once a month, everyone in the US has "Take a sandwich to work" Day, and donates the amount that they would have paid for that lunch to paying off the national debt. And if you don't know how to make a sandwich, I will post instructions on this blog. I mean, come on!
3. The government has a garage sale. Seriously, I bet there is some really cool stuff that could be sold to India or Sweden. (I'm not talking weapons, because that could get tricky)
4. I'm a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and we have a tradition of sending missionaries around the world to tell people about our church. They all do such a great job that I'm wondering if just one day out of the year, we could get the missionaries to sell candy bars as well as proselyte and then get the church to donate the profits. Don't you remember when people used to sell candy bars in school so they could go to band camp? I bet it would work.
5. You have the option when you pay your taxes to donate a few dollars to financing presidential campaigns. How about we give each presidential candidate a ridiculously low amount and force them to get really creative and thrifty and then use the rest of the money toward the national debt? I like it.
Well, a bit of absurdity on this middle of the week. Au revoir!

I actually think that if given a spot on my tax form where I could donate a few dollars directly to pay of the national debt, I might actually do it.
If only it were really absurdity. Check this out...

Great ideas, Wende! There was a story on NPR about how people can make contributions to paying off the deficit. I think tney mentioned that the most someone paid last year was like $10,000. Now all you need to do is run for office. I would totally vote for you. :)
